KARACHI: Muttahida holds elections

KARACHI, July 30: Polling for intra-party elections of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was held on Tuesday at different places in the country, including the party headquarters here at Azizabad.

The elections were held on the basis of proportionate representation to elect office-bearers at central, provincial, district and local levels. People voted for their candidates of choice in a free atmosphere, said a party leader, adding that results would be released on August 1.

In all, 41 candidates were in the run for 25 seats of the central coordination committee, while another 14 contested for five seats of provincial committee in Punjab, 11 for five seats of Balochistan committee and seven for five seats of the party’s committee in the NWFP.

There were 16 candidates for eight seats of the organizing committee in Karachi, while 11 each in Sukkur, Mirpurkhas and Nawabshah contested for the five-seat committees.

The candidates for the central coordination committee included Dr Imran Farooq, Aftab Ahmad Shaikh, Nasreen Jalil, Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Sheikh Liaquat Hussain, Dr Farooq Sattar, Shoaib Ahmad Bukhari, Tariq Javed, Syed Salimul Haq (Salim Shahzad), Kunwar Naved, Anis Ahmad Khan, Kunwar Khalid Younus, Ali Ahmed Barohi, Mohammad Ashfaq, Mustafa Ali Azizbadi, Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, Hassan Musanna Alvi, Mohammad Yousuf, Zahid Qureshi and others.
