GUJRANWALA, July 24: Transporters are boarding Ghakkhar town passengers on the condition that they will pay the toll tax themselves.
Some residents of the Ghakkhar town told Dawn here on Wednesday that Wazirabad tehsil council Nazim Shaukat Manzoor had slapped toll tax in the name of ‘parking fee’ on the GT Road.
They said the Nazim’s men were charging Rs12 per bus, coaster and other heavy vehicles per trip while Rs9 per wagon per trip without any lawful authority.
They alleged that musclemen of the tehsil Nazim also humiliated transporters and passengers if they raised their voice against the illegal ‘jaga tax’ and 11-fold fine.
The Punjab governor should take serious note of the situation, they demanded.
Meanwhile, Transport Society Gujranwala (TSG) wagon owners association accused the tehsil Nazim of charging the illegal tax from transporters in the teeth of an injunction of the RTA secretary and DCO.
There was no justification for charging parking fee in the absence of bus or wagon stand in Ghakkhar town, they added.
