KARACHI, July 20: Sindh governor Mohammadmian Soomro said on Saturday that the privatisation of educational institutions was being carried out in a transparent manner.

The educational institutions in the province, such as the Saint Joseph’s College for Women Karachi and Saint Patrick’s College, Karachi, are being privatized with certain conditionalities.

“Anyone who fulfils these conditionalities would be welcomed,” he said while talking to newsmen during his visit to the Institute of Business Administration.

“What we cannot manage because of limited resources, let other people do it and share with us”, Mr. Soomro said.

To a question about declaring the primary education compulsory in the province, he said the purpose was to create an awareness which takes time.

“We have started the process and we are having a good response”, he said.

He pointed out that in the budget for the current fiscal year the biggest amount has been allocated for the education sector and this is the biggest jump over the last few years. “I am sure it will continue whosoever is in the government”.

The governor said that the govt was paying special attention to education.

About the steps being taken by the government in the realms of education, Mr Soomro remarked that measures in this direction are being taken at different levels, starting from the very primary.

He said that the Sindh government has declared primary education compulsory. It is also the first province to declare the secondary education free.

Regarding the higher education, the governor said he had just had a meeting with the Vice-Chancellors of the public sector universities in the province and discussed the quality, rationalization, the output etc. in order to make sure a good quality faculty, manageable number of students so that the output is good.

Earlier, during his visit to the IBA, the director of IBA, Danishmand, briefed Mr. Soomro about the role, vision and issues facing the institute.

Mr. Soomro also met the members of the board of governors of the IBA. He said that this BOG was doing a very good job and was moving in the right direction, and going ahead with resource mobilization.

He said the mission before the IBA Karachi is to emerge as a centre of excellence and the best institute in the area. “This is a very good objective on the part of IBA and I endorse this.”

The governor also expressed complete satisfaction at the performance of IBA.

Earlier, in his briefing, Director of IBA, Danishmand, said his institution had an unmatched record of producing outstanding graduates who are accepted by major business and industries not only in Pakistan but also in the Middle East, UK, the US and the Far-East.

Danishmand was of the view that IBA Karachi can be a key institution to help build the country.

He said we are thinking of visualizing as to what we need in the next 10 years and are also thinking of constructing a multi-storied building at the city campus.

Dr. Sayeed Ghani briefed the Governor about IBA’s educational programmes and Dr. Muhammad Nishat about the research activities and outputs.—APP
