President accepts resignation of two PCO judges
ISLAMABAD, Aug 8 President Asif Ali Zardari accepted on Saturday resignations of Justice Faqir Muhammad Khokhar and Justice M. Javaid Buttar.
The two judges facing the prospect of being questioned by the Supreme Judicial Council for taking oath under the Provisional Constitution Order on Nov 3, 2007, had tendered their resignations on Wednesday.
Justice Khokhar and Justice Buttar were appointed as judges to the Supreme Court on January 10, 2002 and July 31, 2004, respectively. They were to reach their respective ages of superannuation in April 2010 and November 2013.
Both are entitled to pension and other privileges in accordance with the Supreme Court Judges (Leave, Pension and Privileges) Order 1997.
President's spokesman Farhatullah Babar said that after the Supreme Court judgment of July 31 both judges had informed the president that they had opted for retirement with immediate effect. The president signed the summary of their resignations sent by the prime minister, he added.
Under Article 206 (1) of the Constitution, Mr Babar said, a judge of the apex court or a high court could resign from his office by writing to the president.
