BAHAWALPUR, July 11: Hasilpur police claimed on Thursday having registered a case against its former DSP, two inspectors and 17 constables who shot dead a shepherd on June 24, 1999.

Dawn learnt the police had registered the case under section 302/34 PPC against former DSP Rao Saleem, inspectors Shabbir Hassan and Bashir Ahmad and 17 constables for killing Manzoor Ahmad alias Zilli of Chak 198, Murad.

Deceased’s mother Mai Jiwan, in an application to Bahawalpur district and sessions judge, said her son was looking after his goats and sheep when the police officials shot at him. She said the injured died on his way to a hospital.

She claimed her son was not a proclaimed offender and alleged the police killed him in a fake encounter.

In response to application, the judge deputed Additional District and Sessions Judge Shahid Amin to inquire into the matter.

On the findings of the report, the judge directed the Hasilpur police to register a case against the police officials.

PETROL PUMPS: Special teams will raid petrol pumps in the district to check adulteration, short-measuring and over-charging.

This was stated by District Coordination Officer Imran Ahmad at a meeting with revenue department officials here on Thursday.

The DCO has directed the Civil Defence Organization officials to check fire-fighting equipment at the pumps.

OBSERVED: The World Population Day was observed in the district on Thursday.

A seminar was organized in this connection under the chair of tehsil Nazim Syed Najeebuddin Owaisi at the municipal hall.

The speakers underlined the need for population planning for country’s progress.
