Gul Bahar canters home in feature event at LRC

LAHORE, June 18 Fancied chestnut mare Gul Bahar, displayed all the characteristics of a good fighter to land the feature event during the midweek day/night Lahore Gymkhana races at the Racecourse on Wednesday evening.

Off to a favourable draw, the 40 to 100 favourite Gul Bahar was given a perfect ride by Mazhar Ali to outclass her nine opponents.

Chestnut gelding My One, who was made to fight in his last three outings, finished second one-and-a-half lengths behind after nosing out the roan-horse Jurrat to third position in photo-finish.

Bay mare Lady Sargent did not like the damp under foot conditions of the sandy track and completed the frame over five lengths further back.

Owned by Qaiser Nadeem and trained by Chaudhry Khurram Hussain, the Peshawar Plate class VI division II featuring a card of seven events was contested over the sprinting distance of 1,000 metres.

Later bay mare Armida had no difficulty in winning the supporting event, the Peshawar Plate class VI division III and IV over 1,000 metres.

The 30 to 100 favourite mare Armida lived up to confidence reposed in her by owner Syed Pervez Hussain, who is also an LRC steward.

The mare easily beat bay gelding Deluxe with dark bay colt Dream Catcher third.

Khalil Vicky rode Armida trained by Sohail Aziz.

A lesser light among riding boys, M. Zulfiqar and trainer Rashid Aziz excelled in their respective departments scoring a double each to share day's racing honours.

M. Zulfiqar partnered long shot chestnut horse Owais Love in the third race and then followed it up with a fluent victory on the three to one chance bay filly Fantastic Look who really performed worth her name in the fifth race.

Trainer Rashid Aziz sent out two winners - Bhola Bhala in the fourth and Umair Prince in the sixth race.

The newly enrolled apprentice riding boy Ahsan Khan showed his riding skill when he registered career's first victory in the seventh and last race.

Partnering seven-year-old dark-bay horse Master Gee Ahsan led 15-runner's field all the way home to beat 80 to 100 favourite bay filly, Zarish by over a length.

A race earlier, Ahsan lost by a neck on six-year-old horse Black Tiger to be unlucky to score a brace of winners. Black Tiger was beaten by Umair Prince by a neck at the finishing line.

Only two firm favourites obliged the punters in a card of seven events.
