Botha`s doosra termed illegal

LONDON, May 13 South Africa off-spinner Johan Botha can play in next month's World Twenty20 Championship after his action was cleared by the International Cricket Council (ICC) but he is not allowed to bowl the 'doosra'.

He had been named in South Africa's squad as vice-captain for the event in England despite being reported last month for a suspect bowling action.

A statement from the ICC on Tuesday said an independent test found Botha's 'doosra' was illegal, even though his other deliveries were acceptable.

The analysis on Botha, who has played 45 ODIs, two Tests and nine Twenty20s for his country, was performed by a member of the ICC's panel of human movement specialists in Perth on April 30.

“The analysis showed the amount of elbow extension in Botha's bowling action for his off-break delivery and arm-ball was within the 15-degree level of tolerance,” the statement said.

“The analysis showed the amount of elbow extension in Botha's doosra delivery was 26.7 degrees with no single delivery proving to be legal.”

The 'doosra' is the ball an off-spinner turns away from right-handed batsmen.
