MULTAN, June 25: The Anti-Terrorism Court No 1 on Tuesday sentenced two activists of defunct Lashkar-i-Jhangvi to death on two counts.
According to the prosecution, Qari Umer Hayat and Muhammad Nawaz murdered Farrukh Barjees Haider and Muhammad Idrees on April 26, 2000, in Khanewal. Barjees Haider was the eye-witness and complainant of the case of his father’s murder, who was killed in a terrorist attack in 1998.
The court directed the convicts to pay Rs0.1 million each to the heirs of the deceased. In case of default, both will have to undergo six month imprisonment.
The court awarded death sentence to both the convicts under Section 7-ATA with a fine of Rs100000 each.
In case of default, they will have to undergo five years’ rigorous imprisonment.
The court, however, acquitted co-accused Saqib Tufail and Muhammad Asif giving them the benefit of doubt.
In another case, the Anti-Terrorism Court No 2 awarded death sentence on two counts and life imprisonment to Idress, Imtiaz Ali and Ishaq in a dacoity-cum-murder case of Tudamba police station, Khanewal district.
Besides, the convicts will have to pay Rs0.1 million fine. In case of default, each convict will have to undergo five and a half years rigorous imprisonment.
