This was stated by Col Anjum Shikoh Qazi, in charge of Peshawar Electricity Supply Company’s (Pesco) human resource, here on Monday during a briefing at one of the damaged site.
The Sunday storm heavily damaged seven huge towers of 132kw lines and uprooted a large number of poles of 11kw lines cutting off power supply to most parts of Peshawar and the province.
He said the Wapda partially restored electricity supply through an alternative system on Sunday, however, several parts of the provincial capital remained without power on Monday as the Wapda staff continued repairing the supply lines hit severely by gusty winds.
“About 20 to 30 per cent of the city parts were affected by the Sunday’s storm where some of them remained without electricity for eight hours,” said the Wapda officials at the press briefing.
Apart from the damage to seven large size towers of 132kw lines and several electricity poles of 11kw line, hundreds of kilometres of electricity supply wire (conductor) also got damaged rendering many areas without electricity from 0400pm on Sunday.
“The staff has already started dismantling the 132kw lines towers completely damaged by the strong winds,” said Mr Shikoh.
The seven large towers collapsed when strong winds of 65 nautical miles caused a total loss of Rs 3.5 million, according to Wapda officials.
Three towers are situated on the Kohat Road and other four are situated in the Palosay and Warsak Road areas.
Wapda staff has also removed several number of trees fallen on electricity supply wires in the affected parts of the province, repaired the broken conductors and erected some of the uprooted electricity poles.
“Though electricity supply was temporarily restored to majority of the affected parts of the city on Sunday night, electricity supply to these areas had to be suspended for quite some time on Monday for the repairs,” said Col Anjum. Reviwing the loss the Water and Power Develoment Authority officials said it suffered financial losses to the tune of Rs10 million due to Sunday’s storm.
