SHIKARPUR, June 23: The Zila Nazim of Shikarpur, Muhammad Arif Khan Mehar, said here on Sunday that he was trying to persuade the chieftains of different tribes and notables of the area to convene a Jirga for the settlement of disputes that often lead to violence.
With special reference to the last week’s fierce fighting between Mehars and Jatois, the Nazim said that he was in touch with Dr Muhammad Ibrahim Jatoi, Sardar Himmat Ali Khan Kumario, Sardar Ali Gohar Khan Mehar and other tribal chieftains and elders. He hoped that Jirgas would be convened soon.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr Mehar said that the district administration would try its level best to bring an end to the tribal rivalries which would help maintain a lasting peace in the whole area.
The Nazim strongly criticized police for their ‘negative role’ in revealing the story and identifying the characters in the Mehar-Jatoi tension.
He regretted that police had labelled as ‘hardened criminals’ the six Mehars and four others killed in the attack/clash.
No arms, the deceased were accused of having possessed, were found even after the fighting was over, he pointed out.
He advised the police not to level allegations against any person without a solid proof.
The Nazim said that his position had made him responsible to ensure safety and security of people and that he would do his utmost to provide protection to the life, property and honour of every citizen in his district.
