HYDERABAD, June 22: The 2002 Integrated Plan to Combat Summer Floods and Rains was discussed at a meeting held at the Shahbaz Hall here on Saturday.

Speaking at the meeting, District Nazim Dr Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman, who presided over the meeting, asked taluka Nazims to constitute committees at the taluka level and submit the list of required facilities by the first week of July to face any eventuality.

He also announced the formation of two district committees, one for rural area, headed by himself, and one for urban area, headed by Deputy District Nazim Nawab Rashid Ali Khan, for over all monitoring of the situation.

He said due to the dry weather, prevailing for the last four to five years, embankments had become weak. He directed irrigation authorities to identify vulnerable points and arrange cash amount to make available Abkalani material at such points in time.

The district Nazim said he would visit protective bunds falling in Hyderabad district to ensure that they were properly maintained.

He took notice of the report by the director agriculture engineering that Rs142.79 million were outstanding against irrigation department since 1972 and urged the authorities concerned to deposit the required amount to get bulldozers repaired to meet the flood emergency.

The district Nazim asked the irrigation representatives to get the issue settled with the agricultural engineering department to avoid national loss.

He stressed that an effective communication system be established at the protective bunds which should be linked with the district Nazim’s andd DCO’s vehicles, besides emergency centres at the DCO office and taluka offices.
