LAHORE, June 13: Three surgeons of Ittefaq Hospital have restitched a completely chopped off genital organ of a young man after a two-and-a-half-hour complicated operation.

The patient brought to the hospital from Sialkot on May 22 now feels he has been completely cured.

Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, Ittefaq Hospital medical superintendent Dr Abdul Quddus said the patient was brought to the hospital emergency with a completely chopped off organ.

He said a three-surgeon team led by Dr Shaukat Zubair accepted the challenge and proved their skill to save the 31-year-old man from physical, emotional and psychological problems. He claimed that it was the first surgery of the kind performed successfully in the world. “There was one such in the US but in that case the original organ was not stitched. It was repaired through plastic surgery,” he claimed.

Dr Zubair said he, Dr Daud and Dr Naseeruddin, had stitched the tissues, blood vessels and urinary vessel in a two-and-a-half-hour long operation. He said the patient had fully recovered.

Dr Zubair said the successful surgery was possible because the patient had reached the hospital and was operated upon within six hours after the incident and because all the required facilities were available at the hospital.

He said the operation involved experts in general surgery, urology and plastic surgery. He said the urine bag, too, had been detached and the man was normal.

The patient claimed that some of his enemies had chopped off his genital organ. He said that he was going to be married on May 26. The patient, currently working as a paramedic, said he had been a student union leader at Murray College, Sialkot.
