When you think of boomerangs you imagine a cartoon character throwing it on its opponent and after hitting it eventually returns back to its point of origin. In reaction the first thought that comes to your mind is that the stick contains some magical power, which is absolutely ridiculous.
I first saw the use of boomerang in a film wherein Bruce Willis film who was an Australian Aborigine used the boomerang for combat. The scene was Bruce Willis threw the boomerang in the air for scaring birds and to my utter surprise it came back to him. At first I thought it was magic as I had seen these kinds of scenes in Harry Potter but it was true that boomerang after been thrown returns to its original point. It inspired me to find its nature and the spell which makes it turn. So I just searched on the Net and I had everything I wanted. Let me tell you the brief history of this wonderful device.
The ancient people created many small but useful objects to accomplish their daily tasks. Boomerang was used by them for hunting, fighting and for communication purpose. You would be surprised to know how one could communicate with a piece of wood. But it is possible, our ancient guys when covered large distances used the returnable boomerang to communicate. This is a very effective way for communicating because boomerangs can move several metres in the air. Hunting was also one of the major uses of boomerang. Australian Aborigines used it to take down a healthy kangaroo. In case of emus, a boomerang goes straight towards the neck and breaks it. This device was difficult to use but its results ware accurate. Boomerang is a superb display of complex physics and is a terrific sport.
When we talk about boomerangs, we usually think of returning boomerangs but these boomerangs are very difficult to use and most of the time, after hitting the target they do not return, instead they fall down thus defeating the purpose of the design. Returning boomerangs are about one to two feet in length but aren`t effective for hunting. On the other hand, non-returning ones are effective as hunting weapons as they target the prey accurately and run at a very high speed. The third type of boomerang is battle boomerang which was used in combats.
If you see a boomerang, you will notice that it is just a banana-shaped tool which is quite easy to make, but it needs great care in its construction as a single mistake can produce errors in its flight. I tried many times before I was able to make one.
There are plenty of objects that we use everyday but we do not notice how valuable can they be if designed
perfectly. Aeroplane, bicycle all are predecessors of boomerang. Abori-gines observed the flight of the birds and inspired from them, they made the boomerang. Nature is everywhere — all we need to do is to use it in a constructive way.
