Azhar’s 50 fails to save Surrey

LONDON, May 1: Nottinghamshire’s South Africa-born paceman Greg Smith took three for eight as Midlands rivals Derbyshire were thrashed by 10 wickets Tuesday in a Benson and Hedges Cup match reduced to 10 overs per side because of rain.

After Smith had helped hold Derbyshire to 72 for seven, South Africa all-rounder Lance Klusener’s unbeaten 39 off 27 balls, including a pulled six for victory, finished the Trent Bridge match.

Australia’s Michael DiVenuto (30) got Derbyshire off to a decent start before he was caught by Kevin Pietersen, like Smith a South African-born player now qualified for England, off Gareth Clough.

And as Nottinghamshire coach and former South African all-rounder Clive Rice, once the county’s captain, looked on, Klusener then had Steve Stubbings (26) caught by Clough.

That was the cue for left-armer Smith to begin a destructive spell of three wickets in five balls, all his victims bowled.

First to go was Derbyshire captain and England all-rounder Dominic Cork (eight) with Dominic Hewson and Mohamed Ali both falling for ducks.

Tuesday’s other zonal games between Somerset and Glamorgan and Middlesex and Essex were both abandoned because of rain.
