Remounts lift Basant Cup

LAHORE, Feb 16: Five goals by Gerardo Mazzani helped Remounts win the Power International Basant Cup polo tournament, defeating Samsung Blues 11-8-1/2 at the Lahore Polo Club Saturday.

Malik Asif Yar Tiwana scored five goals including a hat trick but despite his best efforts, blues could not meet the challenge.

For the winners, besides Mazzani, the other scorers were Ahmed Khan who scored three goals and Sufi Aamir who added two goals. Manzoor Shah chipped in with one goal

For the losers, besides Asif, his brother Atif Yar Tiwana, Faiz Rahim Khan and Samiullah scored one goal each. Half goal was the handicap.

Remounts came out with a lead of 3-1 1/2 at end of the first chukker with Mazzani scoring two goals and his team-mate Ahmed Khan adding one goal. For Samsung Blues, Faaiz Rahim Khan struck a goal.

In the second chukker, Remounts maintained its edge by adding three more goals while Samsung Blues scored two goals. 

Remounts’s Mazzani, Sufi Amir and Manzoor Shah scored the goals. For Samsung Blues Samiullah scored a field goal with an angular shot before Asif converted a 30-yard penalty hit.

Asif excelled in the third chukker and scored four goals. He completed his hat trick by converting a 40 yards penalty hit and then a spot penalty near the goal post.

The offensive Asif scored two more goals in quick succession before his brother Atif scored a goal in the last minutes to bring Samsung Blues ahead for the first time in the match 8-1/2 to 8. Ahmad Khan and Gerardo Mazzini scored one goal each for Remounts in the third chukker.

Remounts scored the remaining three goals in the fourth chukker.

A decisive goal by Captain Shaukat Malik and one and a half goal advantage on the handicap helped Samsung Mobiles to take third position as they defeated KFC Remounts by 5- 1/2-5

For the winners, Ramiro Garros scored the other three goals.

For the losers, Arslan Nazir and Toto Collardin scored two goals each. Captain Shaharyar added one goal.
