Sensational run by Cisco Magic

LAHORE, Feb 16: Bay filly Cisco Magic caused a sensation by producing a blistering turn of foot to win the Qutab-ud-Din Aibak Cup run over seven furlongs during the 19th Lahore Winter Meeting at the Racecourse Saturday.

With riding boy Qamar Zaman in the saddle,  this four-year-old Cisco Magic, had finished a disappointing fourth in the 1000 Guineas Of Pakistan 2002, run over a mile last Sunday.

Sent postwards at 5 to 2, Cisco Magic, rallied from fourth position to win the race by half-a-length from bay gelding Think Thank holding off a strong challenge from Think Thank and Run Way Lady in the home straight and stretched out in a handsome style to an effortless victory.

Bay mare Run Way Lady finished third, one-and-a-half length further behind while the bay horse Admiral’s Way, humping a top weight of 10 stone 11 pounds, completed the frame about two lengths further back. In all, a dozen competed the event.

Owned jointly by Munir Ahmad Dar and Fawad Ahmad Cheema, Cisco Magic, clocked one minute 29 seconds over the distance. This was the fifth race in racing order.

The sixth and supporting event also run over a similar distance was won by bay colt Desert Dream. Partnered ably by riding boy A. Imran, Desert Dream in a late burst of speed powered his way from third position to win the race from Quest For Success by two-and-a-half lengths. 15 ran for the event in which the winner clocked one minute 28 seconds over seven furlongs.

In the third race, the improving bay colt Raj Ruks more than justified his 80 to 100 favouritism when he defeated  bay gelding Burq Raftar by half-a-length after a grim fight.

Riding boy Nazir Ahmad was seen at his best, punching home Raj Ruks and never allowing Burq Raftar to forge ahead, who had at one stage almost levelled up. Zargar and Time To Lead made up the frame among 16 starters.

The 5 to 1 chance bay mare Royal Speed in a courageous front- running won the second race run over six furlongs. Royal Speed, who loves to make pace, set out to make all the running right from the start.

In the straight she repelled the challenge of the fancied Royal Gamble and the joint-favourite Moment To Moment, who finished second and third respectively. The neglected Arcade Princess completed the board among 16 runners.

The race ended in an interesting contest between the three.

The punters were hoping that Royal Speed, who generally slows her speed after the final bend, would make room for the fancied Royal Gamble to forge ahead but this time she unexpectedly maintained the lead till finishing post. Only two favourites won in a card of six events.
