KARACHI, March 6: A portion of the main University Road, from Gulshan Town Municipal Administration office to Al-Hilal Society, has been rendered in a dilapidated condition in the wake of ongoing sewerage line laying works and leaking pipelines.
The road, which was already in bad shape since long due to leaking pipelines, has now almost been devastated by digging for replacing obsolete sewerage lines. One can see heaps of earth accumulated all along the road, creating a polluted atmosphere and obstructing the flow of vehicular traffic.
Both lanes of a track of the road have either developed deep craters and potholes, or are littered with earth, making the vehicular traffic to pass at a snail's pace.
The flow of traffic on the same portion of the road is also often held up due to the haphazard parking of up-country bound jumbo-sized buses, and frequent movement of water tankers drawing water from a nearby hydrant.
The presence of the huge quantity of earth on the road and its dilapidated condition has now become a source of nuisance for motorists passing it. Long and lengthy traffic jams have become a routine, causing delays to motorists and wasting fuel.
Visiting the road, one can see that the flow of traffic almost comes to a grinding halt whenever the driver of any upcountry-bound jumbo-sized bus manoeuvres to park his vehicle on the roadside. Or, when the driver of a water tanker takes a U-turn from the University Road near the Gulshan Town office for proceeding towards the low supply reservoir hydrant or the Hassan Square traffic intersection.
People residing in the vicinity of the Gulshan Town municipal office, and Mashrique Centre and Al-Hilal Society, are the ones who are most affected by the unauthorised bus terminus and frequent movement of water tankers.
They urged the city nazim to shift the terminus to the Super Highway and close the nearby low supply reservoir hydrant.
