KARACHI, Jan 1: Judge Feroz Mehmood Bhatti of the Anti-Terrorism Court-II for Karachi division on Saturday examined the investigation officer of a case against Doctors Akmal Waheed and Arsahd Waheed , besides judicial magistrate Rajab Ali Shar who was cross-examined by the defence counsel.
Resuming hearing in the case registered by the Gulshan-i-Iqbal Police against the accused on charge of harbouring and aiding terrorists involved in acts of terrorism, the court went ahead with the testimony of judicial magistrate whose cross-examination was reserved on the last date of hearing.
To a question by defence counsel M. Ilyas Khan, assisted by Mohammad Farooq, advocate, judicial magistrate Rajab Ali Shar deposed that two confessional statements recorded by him pertain to case of attack on Corps Commander's convoy.
To another question, he said, as per normal procedure, confessional statements are sealed as soon as recording is over and sent to the concerned trial court. He stated that in the present case, statements remained with him which he opened, got photo copies for production before the trial court.
He replied in the negative when suggested that copies of confessional statement were supplied to police officers and that some additions were made at a later stage. The magistrate deposed that confessions were recorded after 17 days of arrest of accused.
Investigation officer SI Mohammad Ajmal Awan in his examination-in-chief stated that investigation of the case was entrusted to him on July 14, 2004, after which he formally arrested the accused from Anti-Violence and Crime Cell, Garden and started interrogation.
As a result of questioning, Arshad Waheed led to the house of accused Ata-ur-Rahman where he allegedly treated co-accused Qasim who sustained injuries in an act of terrorism.
During cross examination, the IO admitted that the brother of the accused, Ata-ur-Rahman, was available at the place, but he was neither made a witness nor an accused in the case.
The court later put off hearing till Jan 4 when the IO would be further cross-examined.
REMANDED: Shoaib Khan, alleged to be the don of Karachi's underworld, was remanded to the custody of investigation police, Zone IV, till Jan 8 by judicial magistrate Anwarul Hasan Siddiqui on Saturday.
Earlier, the investigation officer produced the accused amid strict security arrangements and in remand papers stated that the accused during interrogation claimed that he is the don of underworld and running a large cartel, including vice dens, gambling dens and is also engaged in target killing of opponents and political figures.
A large cache of arms is dumped at a place for these activities, accused was stated to have disclosed before the investigators.
A raid was conducted at a house in the jurisdiction of Police Station Kalakot in pursuance of startling disclosures made by the accused during which two rocket launchers and four hand-grenades were recovered from the place.
The judicial magistrate, perusing the remand papers, remanded him to custody of the investigation police till Jan 8.
Another judicial magistrate, Rubab Fatima, remanded co-accused Mohammad Akram, son of Pir Ji Achhan, to police custody till Jan 4. The accused was arrested during the raid on the pointation of accused Shoaib Khan.-APP
