KARACHI, Dec 18: PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari said on Saturday that his enemies used every tactics and power at their disposal to target him because the party had come out as the real winner.

"I have uphold the honour of the party and am present among party workers and colleagues while the opponents stand disgraced after holding me hostage for eight long years," he told party cadre of all the city areas, districts and affiliated organizations of the PPP who met him at Bilawal House.

PPP Sindh President Syed Qaim Ali Shah, General Secretary Rafiq Engineer (MPA), Information Secretary Waqar Mehdi, Karachi Division President Rashid Rabbani and others were also present on the occasion.

Asif Zardari said Karachi was his own city as he had got his education here, driven cycle on its streets and travelled in trams here. "And I understand the problems of Karachi very well,'' he added.

He commended the sacrifices of the party workers and termed them 'true torch-bearers' of the ideology and philosophy of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

The PPP leader informed the gathering that he was writing a book on the historic moments of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in jail cell as, "I myself observed the same cell closely during my experience in the prison."

Mr Zardari pointed out that 27 years had passed since the martyrdom of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, but his slogans were still being raised all over Pakistan.

He said he faced enemies' injustices with patience and steadfastness as a PPP worker, choosing the path of Shaheed Bhutto who kissed the noose and lived forever in the hearts of people.

He said the consciousness created among people by Bhutto had compelled Sardars, Jageerdars, capitalists and even dictators to go to the doors of people to seek vote.

He said the rulers were talking of elections in 2007 because they were fearful of the PPP. He repeated that elections would be held in 2005 and the rulers had finally accepted the PPP's basic principle that 'all power rests with the people.'

Earlier, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Rashid Rabbani and others paid tributes to Asif Zardari and stated that the bravery and steadfastness that he had displayed during his eight-year detention has infused great mobilization in the party workers.
