KARACHI: Accident triggers off violence: NED student killed

KARACHI, Nov 20: A fresh NED graduate died after being knocked down by a minibus on University Road here on Saturday. The accident triggered off violence as enraged people set the killer vehicle on fire and attacked police with stones.

Police said that Syed Noman Hasan Zaidi, 25, was going to the NED University for some work when he was hit from the rear by a minibus of route G-7 near Safari Park. He sustained serious injuries and was taken to a private hospital where he died.

Enraged people surrounded the minibus after the accident and set it on fire. They also raised slogans against transport operators and the traffic police.

The area police rushed to the spot and tried to disperse the furious people. However, the people pelted them with stones. Police tossed some teargas shells and resorted to baton-charging to bring the situation under control.

After about an hour of disturbances, the University Road was reopened for vehicular traffic.

Noman Zaidi, a fresh graduate from the NED University, was a resident of North Nazimabad and working with a private company, police said, adding that his body was shifted to Civil Hospital for autopsy before being handed over to his family.

In another accident a man, Mohammad Wazir, was killed by a hit-and-run vehicle near Sohrab Goth intersection. His body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy.

FOUND DEAD: Body of a 50-year-old man was found lying in the bushes at an isolated place in Landhi on Saturday.

Police said that the man appeared to be a 'malang'. The mark of injury on his temple suggested that he was hit with an iron rod. The body was shifted to a hospital for autopsy.

DROWNING: Two bodies, one of a man and the other of a woman, were found lying on beaches in Clifton and Keamari on Saturday.

Police said that the woman was in here mid-20s and her body was found at the Clifton beach in the limits of Boating Basin police. Police believed the woman might have committed suicide by jumping into the sea. The body was shifted to a hospital for autopsy. Her identity could not be ascertained immediately. Later, the body was sent to Edhi morgue for identification.

The other body, of a man in his early 50s, was found near fish harbour. It was shifted to a hospital for autopsy before being sent to Edhi morgue for identification. Police could not establish cause of his drowning.

EXPLOSION: Two labourers died when a gas cylinder exploded at a shop in Liaquatabad on Saturday.

Police said that Noman, 26, and Omair, 25, were repairing a refrigerator and filling up gas in its pipes at a shop in Liaquatabad when the gas cylinder exploded.

Both of them died on the spot. Their bodies were shifted to a hospital for autopsy and later handed over to their families. Noman was a resident of Liaquatabad whereas Omair lived in Bhangoria Goth, Federal B Area.

MLO SUSPENDED: A medico-legal officer of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre was suspended on Saturday over the charges of dereliction of duty and misuse of powers.

According to a handout released by the Sindh Information Department, Dr Mubarak Pathan would now face a departmental enquiry. He was accused of negligence in the case of Faraz Naveed, son of Naveed Baseer, who was killed on Nov 10 in Ferozeabad.

The body of Faraz Naveed, said the press release, was taken to the JPMC for an autopsy where it lay unattended for more than three hours. This led to anxiety among journalists as well as other members of the civil society.

On the complaints of several people, an initial enquiry was conducted by Faisal Malik, the adviser for health to the chief minister, added the press release.
