LAHORE, June 3: District Nazim Mian Amer Mahmood has announced the hand over of the primary and middle schools to union councils to promote the education at grassroots level.

Announcing the district education plan at a workshop here on Monday, Mian Amir said the district government would provide maximum funds for the promotion of education. He, however, stressed for the judicious use of funds to promote the education.

He said all government schools and colleges would be granted autonomy to the extent that they could take decisions on certain issues at institutional level.

He said the district government had a plan to constitute education boards to promote education. It would also make rules to transfer the annual budget to respective tehsils to run educational institutions in their jurisdiction.

He gave details about the constitution and functions of the school, union council and district education boards.

Under the new system, he said the city government education department would become a consultative institution and consider and implement the recommendations of the school boards.

He said the district government would also provide infrastructure and other facilities to those educational institutions on priority basis where no such facilities existed.

He said the government would also allocate funds to honour those teachers and students who would show best results.

PITB chairman Dr Humayun Mian and Punjab University former vice-chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Hamid Sheikh also spoke on the occasion.
