KABUL, Nov 6: President Pervez Musharraf on Saturday pledged to fight terrorism 'offensively' and promised full cooperation with Afghanistan.

Gen Musharraf is the first head of state to visit Kabul since President Hamid Karzai's landslide victory in the Oct 9 polls.

"We are together in the fight against terrorism, and we will fight it offensively and cooperate in all manners to succeed," President Musharraf told a joint press conference with Mr Karzai.

The two leaders held talks on war on terror as well as political, economic and trade relations between Islamabad and Kabul.

"The success of fighting terrorism in Afghanistan is Pakistan's success, and our success in Pakistan will be Afghanistan's success, so therefore,... we both have to succeed for the sake of Afghanistan and Pakistan," he said.

Congratulating Mr Karzai on his victory in the first-ever Afghan presidential polls, he said the success of Afghan elections augured well for both the countries and the region.

The Afghan leader thanked his Pakistan counterpart for visiting him personally to congratulate him on his victory.

"It is a source of great pride for me and the Afghan nation," he said.

Mr Karzai said that Afghanistan would have a foreign policy based on excellent relations with its neighbours and added that Kabul wanted to bolster its economics ties with Islamabad.

"Mr Musharraf proved that Pakistan, its people and the government, shares Afghanistan's happiness... welfare and reconstruction."

President Musharraf said: "We look forward to a relationship of economic, commercial and trade benefits between the two countries."

"The intelligence side must cooperate with each other in locating and identifying areas of successful cooperation."

He said Pakistan's efforts to prevent militants crossing the border to disrupt the Afghan polls had helped the elections pass off smoothly and the policy would continue.

"We blocked the routes. We used the army, we used the frontier corps to establish special blocks so that there was no interference by the terrorists," he said.

"And if the same is done here in Afghanistan, I am sure we will be victorious in denying easy movement to create trouble in each other's countries," he said.

Gen Musharraf reiterated Pakistan's support for reconstruction of Afghanistan.

He said the country would establish communication infrastructure and build rail and road links with Afghanistan.

He said while Pakistan provided sea linkage to Afghanistan with the rest of the world, Afghanistan provides land linkages to Pakistan for Central Asian Republics.

He said Pakistan was ready to provide electricity to border areas of Afghanistan and added that his country would also help in construction of academic blocs in the universities of Kabul, Jalalabad and an IT block and artificial limb centre at Mazar-i-Sharif.

Answering a question, President Musharraf said Pakistan would be pleased if Afghanistan applied for the membership of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation.

Mr Karzai said Afghanistan would like to be part of Saarc.

Later, President Musharraf had a meeting with former Afghan King Zahir Shah. The president remained with Mr Shah for some time and inquired about his health.
