GUJRANWALA, Nov 1: The Regional Transport Authority officials impounded around 50 wagons of Transport Society Gujranwala (TSG) during the last three days, it was learnt here on Monday.

Reports said different government departments, including traffic police, motor vehicle examiner, excise and taxation token branch, and environment protection agency officials had been deployed on the GT Road to prevent wagon owners from plying their vehicles despite the Supreme Court's verdict.

Earlier, the district administration had allowed plying of some wagons on the GT Road due to shortage of franchized buses some two weeks ago.

When contacted, RTA Secretary Sikander Zulqarnain confirmed that a summary regarding the impounded wagons was being sent to the transport department for further action.

Welcoming the court decision, the TSG and motor federation office-bearers alleged that some federal and provincial ministers were involved in the franchized transport 'scam'.

ROBBERY BID: The National Highway and Motorway Police (NH&MP) foiled a robbery attempt here on Monday near Sadhoki Khori on the GT Road following an exchange of fire for half an hour.

On a tip-off, the anti-dacoity squad led by, Patrolling Officer Tahir Rashid, reached the spot. On seeing the police, the dacoits opened fire which was returned. The bandits managed their escape.

CHALLAN TICKETS: Traffic police claim to have issued 701 challan tickets to vehicle owners, including 34 buses, 204 wagons, 212 motorcycles, eight taxis, 34 pick-up, 12 cars, 11 tractor-trolley and three coasters during the last 24 hours.

This was stated by DSPs Syed Noor Hussain Shah and Najib Akram Man at a briefing here on Monday.
