KARACHI, Oct 28: Residents of 100 Quarters, Korangi Town, staged a protest demonstration outside Karachi Press Club on Thursday morning against the water shortage and choked sewerage in the locality.

Belonging to the working class, the mostly teenaged protesters held placards inscribed with slogans deploring lack of basic civic facilities in the two-decade-old settlement.

"We are living in filthy streets and without drinking water as there is no water supply system or any other civic facility," said an elderly protester, Abdul Aziz.

"We buy water for domestic use from donkey-cart owners and pay Rs80 for a trip, which is also contaminated but we are compelled to consume it as we do not have another option," he said.

Abdul Jaleel, another aged protester, said: "When we went to the nazim of union council-5, Korangi, he said he could not give water connection to our locality. We went to the town nazim and explained our ordeal to him and he said the area did not come under his jurisdiction."

About 450 families were displaced from the Lines Area, Saddar, some 20 years back by a construction company and settled them in the neglected area in Korangi with alternative plots.

This settlement is located adjacent to Ibrahim Haideri, Bin Qasim Town, but in fact falls in the limits of Korangi Town.

Ali Jan Abbasi, another protester, said: "It is the first time that we are staging a demonstration to draw the attention of the relevant authorities towards the problems of the locality. If the authorities continued to ignore it, we will stage hunger strike along with our families." -PPI

JAMSHED TOWN: A acute shortage of water in UC-7, Jamshed Town, has created a lot of troubles for the residents during Ramazan.

The areas including Rohail Khand, Darulaman Society and Delhi Mercantile Society have been facing a shortage of water for long and during Ramazan the water shortage problem has deepened.

The naib nazim of UC-7, Waleed Ahmed, criticizing the Karachi Water and Sanitation Board said the jacking work of the Gulistan water pump at Shaheed-e-Millat Road was being delayed though the KWSB had been informed about it several times.

The city nazim had issued orders in this regard which were rejected, he added.

He demanded that the authorities concerned address water shortage problem in UC-7 so that people keep fast without any difficulty. - PPI
