HARIPUR, Oct 18: To ensure uninterrupted supply of flour at controlled rates during the holy month of Ramzan, the district food authorities have decided to distribute 50,000 bags of flour at subsidized rates at selected points in Haripur , official sources told Dawn here on Monday.

In line with the direction of the government pertaining to the supply of edible items to consumers under the Ramzan package during the holy month, the district food authorities had announced distribution of about 12,000 bags of 20 kilograms flour of fine quality at 12 different points every Sunday.

These points were set up in suitable areasof each constituency of PF 49,50,51 and 52, of the district. District Food Controller Mohammad Ishtiaq Khan told Dawn that consumers, particularly those of remote areas, would be able to purchase a 20 kg bag at Rs207 while in the open market the same commodity with same weight was available at Rs260.

Sochpur, Gandaf, Bait Gali, Narra, Bagra, Khanpur, Sera-i- Nehmat Khan, Beer, Rehana, Najafpur and others were among the selected points where, according to him the flour bags at subsidized rates would be distributed under the supervision of area nazim, representatives of DCO and the food department.

To a question, Ishtiaq said there were 10 flour mills operating in the district, which were getting 27 bags of wheat on daily basis while 278 bags are supplied to them once a week.

About the fixation of flour rates, he said that since the majority Of mill owners purchased wheat from Punjab on their own or selling the commodity imported from Punjab, the rates could not be fixed.

Meanwhile, the Assistant Coordinating Officer Syed Hassnain Kazmi and DFC Mohammad Ishtiaq Khan has, during a surprise visit to different market places, caught seven butchers and two vegetable vendors on the charge of overcharging consumers. The accused were arrested and sent to jail by the court.

BURIED ALIVE: A boy was buried alive when his clay-built roof caved in in village Kangra. Police said that Arsalan, son of Mohammad Safdar, a primary class student, was asleep in his one-room dilapidated house along with other family members when the roof of their clay-built house caved in on Wednesday, killing him on the spot. However, other family members escaped unhurt.

In a different incident, a man was shot dead in village Godi Kalan, some 24 kilometres from here on Thursday.

Police said Chan Zeb, son of Gul Khan of village Phohar Sherwan, was on his way to an adjoining village of Thathi Sydan when he was attacked allegedly by Ishtiaq, Ishfaq and others.
