LARKANA, July 3: A large number of political activists and farmers on Saturday took out a procession in Ratodero town against an acute water shortage in Sindh.
Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz chairman Bashir Qureshi led the protesters who marched on the main roads of the town.
They carried banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the government.
They also blocked the Larkana-Sukkur and Larkana-Shahdadkot roads.
Growers from Kodrani, Jamal Chandio, Bakhso Sariyo, Sanhro Machhi, Mohammed Khan Jalbani, Bozdar and Waris Dino Machhi villages participated in the protest.
They said that there was no water in Jalbani Shakh, Kori Shakh, Rato Shakh, Waris Dino Machhi minor, Koor Khairo Shakh, Chhabria Shakh, Sujawal Shakh, Dakhan Shakh and others water channels off-taking from the Khairthar canal.
Speaking on the occasion, Bashir Qureshi, Momin Odho, Bashir Junejo, Manzoor Ghanghro and others alleged that the superintendent engineer of the Khairthar canal was selling Sindh's water to Balochistan growers.
They said that the water shortage would affect Sindh's agriculture economy. They demanded that irrigation water should be distributed among provinces according to the 1945 Water Accord.
The irrigation officials reached the spot and sought a seven- day time for the supply of water in all tributaries and channels off-taking from the Khairthar canal and Saifullah Magsi branch. On their assurance, the protestors ended the protest and dispersed peacefully.
