Pakistan capture Asian title

ISLAMABAD, June 26: Pakistan captured Asian Senior Squash title beating Malaysia 2-1 in the final of the team event in Kuala Lumpur, says a press release.

In the first match Kenneth Low defeated Pakistan's Farrukh Zaman 9-7, 2-9, 10-8, 9-4 but Manzoor Zaman then downed Ong Beng Hee, the holder of the individual crown, 9-3, 10-8, 8-10, 9-7. Finally Shahid Zaman knocked out Mohd Azlan 9-5, 10-8, 2-9, 2-9, 9-7.

Meanwhile in the women's team event, Pakistan finished seventh by defeating Sri Lanka.

Muqaddas Ashraf outplayed Vidushi Gurunada 9-5, 9-1, 9-0 while Maria Toor Pakay was a 9-4, 9-0, 9-5 victor against Kushani Daluwata.

Final placing (men): 1. Pakistan, 2. Malaysia, 3. India, 4. Kuwait, 5. Hong Kong, 6. Korea, 7. Japan, 8. Jordan, 9. Singapore, 10. Indonesia, 11. Chinese Taipie, 12. Macau.

Women: 1. Malaysia, 2. Hong Kong, 3. Japan, 4. India, 5. Korea, 6. Singapore, 7. Pakistan, 8. Sri Lanka.

Earlier, Pakistan blanked Kuwait 2-0 in the semifinal to set a date with hosts Malaysians in the final.

Majid Khan outclassed Naser Al Ramzi 9-3, 9-1, 9-2 while Pakistan's top player Mansoor Zaman also clinched the match in three straight sets against top Kuwaiti player Bader Al Hussaini.

Mansoor won the first set 9-0 and second 9-4. In the last set Bader put up tough fight to make a comeback but his efforts went in vain as Mansoor won the last set 9-7.

Malaysia also moved into team finals overcoming India 2-1.

Malaysia 2 India 1 (Kenneth Low lost to Siddarth Suchde 9-2, 9-6, 9-4; Ong Beng Hee bt Ritwik Bhattacharya 9-0, 9-3, 10-9; Azlan Iskandar bt Saurav Ghosal 9-2, 9-2, 9-5).

Pakistan 2 Kuwait 0 (Majid Khan bt Nasser Al Ramzi 9-3, 9-1, 9-2; Mansoor Zaman bt Bader Al Hussaini 9-0, 9-4, 9-7).

Women's team semifinals:

Malaysia 2 India 0 (Tricia Chuah bt Alisha Mashruwala 9-0, 9-0, 9-1; Nicol David bt Joshna Chinappa 9-1, 9-0, 9-3). Hong Kong 2 Japan 0 (Annie Au bt Kozue Onizawa 9-4, 9-1, 9-3; Rebecca Chiu bt Mami Nishio 9-6, 9-1, 9-0).-PPI
