KARACHI, April 2: A retired barrister and his 70-year-old wife, a retired captain of the army medical corps, were found dead in their apartment in the quiet neighbourhood of Fatima Jinnah Road late Thursday night.
Bodies of Syed Mohammad Ansar, 80, and Safia were recovered by the police from their third floor apartment in Jem Homes behind the Indian Consulate building, after neighbours informed the police.
"Next-door neighbours told the police that they have not seen the couple for the last 24 hours and the door is locked which is unusual as they remain in contact with them on a daily basis", said DSP Civil Lines Rana Pervaiz, quoting neighbours.
The elderly couple were dragged into the apartment's store after being killed in the living room as the sofa had blood-stains all over it, the DSP said.
Blood had dried up at the crime scene and stench was emanating from the bodies.
Police found an iron rod at the apartment which was used as a weapon. They also found a pair of gloves, the DSP said.
The killers had fixed adhesive tape on the mouth of both the victims and their hands were tied behind their backs.
From initial findings, it seemed that the couple had died due to serious head injuries.
Various house-hold articles, including books, family pictures and other items, were found scattered in the apartment. The killers might have scattered them to give an impression that it was a robbery, the DSP maintained.
Police said that couple's only son Ansar M. Haroon, is a medical practitioner based in Houston, USA.
The bodies were handed to victim's brother Dr Mushafa Ahmed, who kept them in the Edhi's cold storage, awaiting arrival of the couple's only son.
The victim's brother had recently returned from Saudi Arabia where he was settled.

Police said Abdul Malik, 30 and his brother Abdul Majid, 32, both were present at their medical store in Kalakot No.1, when three men came to their shop.
TPO Lyari Faisal Noor told Dawn that one of the suspect remained outside the shop while two entered the shop and tried to snatch cash and calling cards.
As the two brothers resisted, the suspects opened fire, causing multiple bullet wounds to both the brothers.
The wounded were taken to the Civil Hospital where they were admitted for treatment.
Recalling an incident, TPO Lyari said that four years back Abdul Majid was wounded in a similar dacoity at the same shop.
Following the incident, tension gripped Lyari and shops and other businesses pulled down shutters, anticipating a law and order situation.
