LAHORE, April 2: Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi announced here on Friday that another 15,000 teachers would be recruited next year.
Talking to MPAs from Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh and Jhang, he said the government had recruited 13,000 teachers during the current financial year.
Officials said the next batch of teachers also would be recruited on a five-year contract, and offered slightly better salaries. The recruitment would be district-based to avoid reluctance of teachers to serve in other districts.
The government had recruited the teachers through district committees, headed by DCOs.
Earlier, the chief minister said besides implementing the education reform programme, the government was conducting development activities in all constituencies in the province.
He said it was also taking special steps to establish new primary, middle and high schools all over the province. A survey had also been conducted to locate areas without schools, he said.
The government, he said, had started implementing the scheme of charging only 50 per cent of the water rate from the farmers at the tail ends of canals.
He said the last year's wheat procurement drive was a success because of the support by the MPAs, and the farmers obtained fair price of their produce. The subsidized wheat flour scheme provided relief to the poor and the Punjab provided wheat to other provinces and Azad Kashmir to promote national unity.
He said it was the duty of the administrative officers to give importance to the welfare-oriented proposals by the MPAs. He also urged the MPAs to take interest in legislation.
He said basic changes were being brought about in the police system to provide justice to people. Reforms in the police department would give better results, he hoped.
The meeting was attended among others by Communication Minister Chaudhry Zaheeruddin, Excise Minister Chaudhry Muhammad Shafiq, Social Welfare Minister Sughra Imam, Women Development Minister Ashifa Riaz Fatiana, additional chief secretary and secretaries of departments concerned.
