SUKKUR, March 20: The judicial magistrate-III, Sukkur, Ibrahim Soomro, awarded six months imprisonment to union council-6 member Nusrat Hussain Mirani on Saturday.

The councillor was sent to the Sukkur Central Prison-II.

Mr Mirani had staged a sit-in along with other PP activists at Lab-i-Mehran two years back.

Police had arrested all the protestors and later released them on the surety of Mr Mirani.

However, the accused did not appear before the court despite they were issued several notices.

Meanwhile, People's Party Parliamentarians Sindh Council member Shafqat Mirani, Lal Mohammad Bhutto and others said party workers were being victimized.

SIT-IN: Sugar cane growers staged a sit-in on the National Highway, near Naushahro Feroze, on Friday against the non- payment of their dues by the Al-Noor and Sakrand sugar mills.

Speaking on the occasion, cane growers' leaders said the protest would continue till the payment of dues by the sugar mills' owners.

They said the growers of Naushahro Feroze and Nawabshah districts had stopped the supply of sugar cane to mills.

Nawabshah Sindh Abadgar Board president Syed Zain Shah said the Al-Noor and Sakrand sugar mills had not paid dues amounting to Rs120 million.

He said it was unanimously resolved not to supply sugar cane to both the mills due to the non-payment. He said if both the mills did not pay the dues then sugar transportation would not be allowed from these mills.

POWER FAILURE: Residents of the Sukkur city staged a sit-in against the power breakdown and unhygienic condition of their areas on Thursday.

Hundreds of residents of Bashirabad Mohallah gathered on the Sukkur bypass and raised slogans against Hesco officials.

They burnt tyres and pelted stones on vehicles as a result wind glasses of many vehicles were broken.

The sit-in lasted for couple of hours due to which traffic of Sukkur, Larkana, Shikarpur, Chak, Khairpur, and other cities become jam.
