KARACHI, April 19: Constant advancement registered in the field of surgery with minimal incision and early recovery rate needs to be necessarily coupled with absolute expertise and extreme caution on part of surgeons administrating the procedure as otherwise the possible damage may also be significant. These views were expressed at a workshop held at Liaquat National Hospital here on Tuesday.
Discussing and demonstrating powered endoscopic surgery during the workshop, Surgeon Halal Zaki from Ain Shams Hospital, Egypt, and Dr Milind Kiritine from King Edward Medical College, India, advised local ENT surgeons to make adequate use of updated diagnostic machines as CT Scan and MRI prior to resorting the cited surgery. Surgeons need not to only have adequate expertise but must also be absolutely definite about the point and position to be handled before resorting to procedure, they said.
According to Dr Halal Zaki, the EET could be used with absolute knowledge as how it could be handled with complete safety and that concerned surgeons must be fully aware of the anatomy.
Earlier, Dr Shakil Aqil introducing the guest speakers said the workshop was part of the continuing education and training programme for all concerned surgeons with the aim to keep them updated of developments taking place in the field and also provide them chance for hands on training.
Liaquat National Hospital Director Dr Salman Faridi said the hospital catering to the health care needs of the population mainly pertaining to middle and lower income groups had taken upon itself to be not only well equipped but also manned by trained and competent professionals.
According to him, it is with the very motive that training and teaching programmes have emerged as a regular feature at the hospital. He expressed pleasure that the LNH planning to have the facility of powered endoscopic for sinus surgery had arranged the first workshop on the very subject being attended by ENT surgeons from different public and private sector hospitals of the city.
Dr Zia Rizvi mentioned that sinusitis emerging as a common problem in children and adult had its relevant severity too - leaving surgery as one of the important options.
According to him, conventional techniques though efficient do hold a longer duration of recovery often to be complimented by drug therapy, which is but minimized in case of endoscopic surgeries. Endoscopic sinus surgery helps establishing drainage and ensures permanent recovery, he said, reminding that growing pollution and deteriorating environment besides allergy are among the major contributory factors for the condition.
PMA Karachi’s General Secretary Dr Sajjad Qaiser acknowledging the need for proper training of surgeons reminded that updated surgical as well as diagnostic facilities were generally not available at government hospitals including tertiary care centres.
The poorest segment was thus denied of the benefits of modern technology, he regretted calling upon the authorities concerned to ensure regular hands on workshop for health care providers and arrange for modern facilities at institutions largely visited by the masses.—APP
