ISLAMABAD, March 31: The Foreign Office on Thursday dismissed any threat to the country’s nuclear installations amid reports that the interior ministry had directed the provincial governments to ensure their security and safety. Asked to comment on a report to the effect, Foreign Office spokesperson Jalil Abbas Jilani said: “There is absolutely no threat to our facilities and installations.”

“We are quite confident of our security arrangements. Our regular security arrangements for the safety of nuclear assets are high,” he said.

Earlier on Thursday, the BBC in a report from Islamabad had said that the interior ministry had sent a letter to the four provincial home secretaries and the chief commissioner Islamabad Capital Territory on March 5 with the subject, “Indian involvement in Afghanistan – safety/security of nuclear assets”.

The letter, the report said, asked the provincial governments to beef up security around nuclear installations and to be on the look-out for agents who might have been trained by India and Israel in Afghanistan. The letter said the ministry had received reports that Indians remained fully involved in Afghanistan and were also working there against the interests of Pakistan.
