KARACHI, March 31: One person was killed and three others, including the complainant in a kidnapping for ransom case against PML leader Imtiaz Sheikh, suffered injuries in an attack on Korangi Road.
Complainant Zafar Iqbal and his three associates, Mohammad Rafiq, Salim and Yasir, were heading towards DHA in two cars from Hino Chowrangi when they were fired upon by unknown persons near Khayaban-i-Itthad traffic signal.
Mohammad Rafiq died and Saleem and Yasir, accompanying Zafar Iqbal, suffered injuries in the attack.
SHO Defence Zia ul Hasan told Dawn that Zafar and his three associates were close to Khayaban-i-Itthad traffic signal, when their cars were fire upon by unknown persons. The four were rushed to JPMC, where Rafiq was pronounced dead while Saleem, Yasir and Zafar Iqbal alias Zafaru were provided treatment.
Earlier, on late Monday night an FIR was lodged against the sacked revenue minister, Imtiaz Shaikh.
FIR 121/2005 was lodged under section 365/A/109, 506-B at the Korangi police station on the complaint of Zafar Iqbal who stated that on June 28, 2003, his son Mohammad Iqbal, 17, was kidnapped by some suspects who whisked him away in a vehicle (BC-6644) from Qayyumabad.
Later, a ransom amount of 1,500,000 was sought through some middleman. Later, it transpired that the suspects belonged to Imtiaz Skaikh. The complainant secured the release of his son after paying Rs 700,000 to Imtiaz Shaikh in Defence, the FIR maintained.
Zafar Iqbal was coming from the TPO Bin Qasim office where he had gone to seek police security. TPO Bin Qasim said Zafar Iqbal had sought time from him on Thursday, but he had to leave his office to attend a meeting.
Zafar called the TPO, who told him to go see the SHO who will provide him with the police guards.
TPO Aleem Jafri told Dawn that he had instructed the SHO to provide security to Zafar Iqbal as requested by him. However, Zafar Iqbal did not contact the SHO, the TPO added.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim on Thursday suspended TPO Bin Qasim Abdul Aleem Jafferi for negligence of duties.
