Two SSP men get death sentence

SAHIWAL, May 30: Additional district and sessions judge Mirza Abid Jawad Baig on Thursday handed down capital punishment to two leaders and brothers of the banned Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan.

Each of them will pay Rs50,000 as compensation money to the heirs of the deceased.

The judge also awarded 25 years’ rigorous imprisonment each to two other accused besides ordering them to pay Rs100,000 each as compensation money.

Court acquitted six co-accused — Gulzar Ahmed, Maqbool Mua’avia, Maulvi Nazir Ahmed, Soofi Abdullah, Mahmood and Naveed Shahzad for lack of evidence.

According to the prosecution, Maulana Maqbool Ahmad, his brother Soofi Maqsood Ahmad, Muhammad Sarwar and Soofi Muhammad Yaqoob had shot dead two brothers Muhammad Akram and Shahid over a land dispute on Nov 22, 2000, at Chak 114/7-R.

Meanwhile, the same court in another judgment awarded death sentence to the killer of a student on Eid day.

The judge acquitted three co-accused — Usman, Shafiq and Akram — by giving them the benefit of the doubt.

According to the prosecution, convict Imran had killed Irshad Ahmad over a minor issue on March 9, 2001, at Chak 108/9-L.

escape: Four juvenile prisoners escaped from the certified school (prison) here on Wednesday night.

At least 27 juveniles had gone to school mosque to offer their prayers from where four of them disappeared after scaling its boundary wall.

Those escaped are: Akmal Farid, Muhammad Shafiq, Muhammad Abbas and Muhammad Ramzan.

Farid and Abbas were undergoing two-year hard jail each for keeping narcotics. Ramzan was awarded nine-year rigorous imprisonment in a rape case while Shafiq was undergoing two-year hard jail in a sodomy case.

The Punjab Home Department has established the government certified school for juveniles (under 18 years) prisoners where they are given education besides the jail term.

Police on the report of school superintendent Anjum Pervez have registered a case. Later, police recovered Farid and Abbas from their houses in Pakpattan while the hunt for two others was on.

When contacted, the superintendent said that only one constable had been deputed for the security duty at the school which was spreading over an area of 72 kanals of land. Only three constables had been provided for 24 hours duty against the sanctioned posts of 15 constables and a security officer, he said.

Meanwhile, the Punjab Home Department has ordered a probe into the incident.
