SANGHAR, March 20: Speakers at a seminar on the life and times of Pir Sabghatullah Shah Rashdi (Pir Pagaro-VI), commonly known in Sindh as Sooriah Badshah, demanded that Britain should seek an apology from the Hurs for atrocities they committed against them during the freedom movement. The seminar was held to mark the 62nd death anniversary of the Pir in the auditorium of the Pir Sabghatullah Shah Rashdi Shaheed Degree College on Sunday.

A large number of scholars, politicians and people from different walks of life attended the seminar which was organized by the Pir Sabghatullah Shah Rashdi Shaheed (Sooriah Badshah) Memorial Committee. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Qalandar Shah Lakyari said hundreds of Hur freedom fighters were executed without any trial and thousands others were dispossessed and incarcerated in concentration camps along with women, children and elders.

The entire movement for freedom was liquidated and the colonial rulers under a campaign of disinformation started character assassination of Hur fighters. Prof Lakyari said the Pakistan government had forgotten them in 1947 and they were released from the concentration camps in 1952.

Mansoor Qadir Junejo said the Pir was hanged on March 20, 1943 in the central jail Hyderabad but the British rulers were so frightened that they buried him clandestinely at some unknown place which is still unknown. Inam Shaikh said when Sindh was conquered by Sir Charles Napier in 1843 the British forces had looted articles worth Rs160 million from the Hyderabad fort. He said the Makhi lake area in Sanghar district was the only place in the subcontinent where the Martial Law was imposed to crush the Hur freedom fighters.

He said after Plassey the British rulers had met a fierce resistance in Sindh where the Hur freedom fighters had took to the forests, deserts and wetlands.

Prof Umer Chand, Hameed Sindhi, Jawaid Qazi, MPA Dr Bhag Chand and MPA Pir Bux Junejo also spoke on the occasion. They demanded that a Pir Sabghatullah Shah Shaheed chair be established at the Sindh University, March 20 be declared a holiday in Sindh and death cell of the central jail Hyderabad where Sooriah Badshah had spent last days be declared a national monument.
