GUJRAT, March 8: Nine investigators of a German police team on Tuesday visited the district to conduct inquiry into murder of an expatriate, who was allegedly killed by her husband two years ago to pocket insurance amount.
Jalalpur Jattan Saddar police had registered a dacoity-cum-murder case on Jan 15, 2003, when Ashraf, a citizen of Germany, informed the police that some unidentified dacoits had shot dead his wife, Fiza.
During investigation, police sources said, it was found that Ashraf had murdered his wife to take a huge insurance amount from the German government. They said Jalalpur police detained the man in the lock-up without mentioning his arrest on record. After some days, they set him free because of pressure from higher-ups and gave him an opportunity to go back to Germany.
Thereafter, they said, Ashraf succeeded in getting around Rs20 million from the German government as insurance amount claiming his wife's death to be accidental. The matter remained in the cold storage for some months till one of the deceased's close relatives contacted the Gujrat police high-ups and requested them to re-investigate the case. Saddar DSP Alhaj Riaz Cheema was given the task of re-investigation.
The investigation officer found Ashraf involved in the murder and he got a case registered against him. Later, the complainant flew to Germany and informed the foreign government about the matter. The German police succeeded in arresting the suspect and started investigation.
A nine-member team of the German police, assisted by DPO Javed Iqbal Shami, visited the place of crime on Tuesday. They also got exhumation orders from a court. The foreign police will stay in the district till completion of investigation.
ROBBERIES: Robbers plundered cash and valuables worth hundreds of thousands of rupees from passengers of a bus, besides striking at two houses, a PCO, a factory and driving away with two motorcycles and a car in 11 strikes in and around the district during the last three days.
Reports said seven robbers stopped a bus (AJK-8590) near Lakhanwal, Jalalpur Jattan, and snatched cash and valuables worth hundreds of thousands of rupees from passengers. Three armed men entered Barkat Ali's house at Khorry Alam (Dinga) and decamped with Rs50,000 in cash and 10 tolas of gold jewellery.
Robbers forced their entry into Rafique's residence at Sarai Alamgir and took away Rs100,000 in cash and gold ornaments. Two armed men took away Rs15,000 from the PCO of a former minority councillor, Raja S. Victor, in Lalamusa.
Four bandits, who had erected a barricade near Bosal, Lalamusa, stopped the motorcycle of Ifat and snatched from him Rs5,000 in cash, a cell phone and five tolas of gold ornaments from his wife. They also intercepted Nazim's two-wheeler and deprived him and his wife of Rs7,000 in cash, a cell phone and gold jewellery.
Seven dacoits in police uniform deprived more than a dozen passers-by of cash and valuables near Khorrian Morr in Lalamusa. Thieves took away instruments and parts worth Rs150,000 from a fan factory in the Small Industrial Estate.
