Pakistani sailors do well

KARACHI, Feb 27: Lt. Cdr Zahid Rauf of the Pakistani Navy displayed absolute control over his boat in the Laser Standard Championship held in Doha on Saturday, according to a message received here.

Contesting with top sailors from South Africa and Morocco, the Pakistan sailors reigned supreme in their Laser boats, picking up the second spot also through Ashraf Javed, with Morocco's Samil bagging the third spot. Zahid Rauf also won the Master trophy in the Laser class.

In the 470 class after a keen tussle, Augn Myin and Sai Pyae eventually beat off the keen Pakistan challenge. Xeres Avari, son of former Asian Games gold medallists Byram and Goshpi Avari, partnering Rafiq Mahmood was second with Lt. Cdr, Mamoon Saddiq and Amir Nawaz from the Pakistan Navy third. A total number of 16 boats participated in the Laser and 10 in the 470 class.

In the Laser 4.7 youngster Wajahat Ullah Babur and his brother Sabhat Ullah Babur had to be content with the 9th and 12th positions in a fleet of 15 boats.
