KHAIRPUR, Feb 24: A convention of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) here on Thursday demanded that general elections be immediately held under an impartial election commission.
Party activists, district organizers and office-bearers from eight districts attended the convention. The senior-vice president of the Sindh PML-N, Makhdoom Shahnawaz, presided over the convention.
Speaking on the occasion, PML-N leaders said there could be no democracy in the country without the participation of Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto, the leaders of the two big parties.
They said whenever the army had come in power the country had earned bad name. They said that democracy would not grow until the army role in politics was ended. They opposed any army operation in Balochistan, Wana and Waziristan and demanded that it should be stopped.
They said change might take place at any time because in a short period two prime ministers and one chief minister in Sindh had been changed. The convention demanded that the Sindh High Court should take suo motu notice of charges levelled against each other by the Sindh chief minister and the former revenue minister.
It said that after official admission of corruption, there was no reason for the Sindh government to stay in power. Briefing journalists Makhdoom Shahnawaz said that next local bodies elections could unite opposition parties and the ARD might field joint candidates at different levels.
He termed the meeting between Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif as positive and said it might lead to grand alliance.He demanded early and safe return of all popular leaders including Nawaz Sharif, Benazir, Shahbaz Sharif and Ghous Ali Shah.
PROTEST: A large number of people, including PPP office-bearers, Awam Dost Nazims, the president of District Bar Association, NGOs activists and lawyers, observed a token hunger strike for five hours at the Session Court Road here on Wednesday.
PPP-P leader Mubeen Phulpoto, City acting president Munir Mangi, president District Bar Association president Syed Bachal Shah, around 10 Awam Dost nazims and others observed token hunger strike.
The protesters said that Khairpur DPO Imran Yaqoob Minhas was being transferred as he has refused political interference in law and order matters. Speakers said that two days earlier about 47 PPP activists were implicated in false case on behest of the Sindh government.
