Srichaphan ends Coria's trial of indoor circuit

ROTTERDAM, Feb 16: Paradorn Srichaphan brought Guillermo Coria's trial on the indoor circuit to a halt on Wednesday with a 2-6 7-6 6-3 second-round victory at the World Indoor Tournament.

Second seed Coria had opted to skip his favoured clay court events in South America this month to develop his all-court game but the move did not payoff. He succumbed in the first round at Marseille last week and failed against the talented but often inconsistent Paradorn.

Earlier, Joachim Johansson enjoyed his status as the newest member of the top-10 club with a 6-2 6-7 6-3 win over Taiwanese qualifier Yeu-Tzuoo Wang. The Swede, who cracked the ATP top 10 rankings for the first time this week after capturing his second title of the year in Marseille, recovered from a second-set hiccup to win in just under two hours.

"It's always tough to go from one tournament to another without a gap so it takes time to adjust," said Johansson, who won his first title a year ago this week in Memphis.

After climbing 141 places in the standings in just 13 months, he added: "You always want to be on top and if I play the way I know I can, it can only get better but I still have to improve everything in my game."

He was in imperious form in the first set as he overpowered Wang with his blistering ground strokes. Wang refused to be intimidated by his 1.98m tall opponent and hit back in the second when Johansson prepared to serve out for a straight sets victory.

He broke the Swede while trailing 4-5 in the set by forcing Johansson to swipe a forehand into the net before running away with the tiebreak 7-2. The fifth-seeded Swede regained his concentration in the third to seal victory with an overhead smash. The win set up a second-round showdown with his namesake, 2002 Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson.

Paradorn had looked to be on his way out early in his contest against Coria. After entertaining the Ahoy crowd with his range of trick shots, including a hit between his legs and twisting his arm behind his back to smack another, the Asian number one started to find his range towards the end of the second set.

He bagged the tiebreak 7-2 and after a thigh massage at the changeover recharged his batteries he held on to an early break to claim victory. Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka pulled off a shock 7-6 6-2 victory over Frenchman Sebastien Grosjean.

The qualifier made a mockery of the ranking difference with Grosjean, who at number 27 is 101 spots above him, with the biggest win of his professional career. Later in the day, world number one Roger Federer will face Czech qualifier Bohdan Ulihrach in his first match.

RESULTS: Second round Paradorn Srichaphan (Thailand) bt 2-Guillermo Coria (Argentina) 2-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-3.

FIRST ROUND: Ivan Ljubicic (Croatia) bt Dominik Hrbaty (Slovakia) 6-4 1-6 6-2; 5-Joachim Johansson (Sweden) bt Yeu-Tzuoo Wang (Taiwan) 6-2 6-7 (2-7) 6-3; Stanislas Wawrinka (Switzerland) beat Sebastien Grosjean (France) 7-6 (7-5) 6-2.

VENUS BEATS RAZZANO

BRUSSELS: Venus Williams swept past France's Virginie Razzano 6-3 6-0 on Wednesday in a second round match in the Antwerp Diamond Games, a tournament she won in 2002 and 2003.

"My tennis was very good today," said the American. "But it is no surprise to me because I feel very healthy and have been working well lately." Earlier, seventh seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland beat Frenchwoman Camille Pin 6-3 4-6 6-1.

Former world number one Kim Clijsters, who made a successful comeback from injury with an easy victory over Croatia's Jelena Kostanic in the first round, was playing fifth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova in the second round later on Wednesday.

RESULTS: Second round: Patty Schnyder (Switzerland) bt Camille Pin (France) 6-3 4-6 6-1; Venus Williams (U.S.) bt Virginie Razzano (France) 6-3 6-0.

RODDICK IN 2ND ROUND

RALEIGH: Top seed Andy Roddick utilised his booming serve to turn back South Korea's Lee Hyung-taik in the first round of the Kroger St Jude ATP tournament in Memphis on Tuesday.

The American sent down 11 aces as he eased to a 6-3 6-4 victory in just 58 minutes. The world number three never faced a break point and broke serve once in each set to defeat the South Korean for the second time in as many tournaments.

Roddick is seeking his second consecutive ATP victory after picking up the San Jose Open title in California last week, an event where he beat Lee on his way to the final.

The American will face Arnaud Clement in the second round after the Frenchman defeated Davide Sanguinetti of Italy 7-6 1-6 6-1. American Jan-Michael Gambill posted the biggest upset of the day, scoring an impressive 6-0 6-4 win over fourth seed Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic.

Third-seeded American Vince Spadea also advanced, ousting Sweden's Thomas Enqvist 7-5 6-2. Xavier Malisse of Belgium, champion of the Delray Beach event earlier this month, also made the second round with a 6-3 6-3 win over Germany's Philip Kohlschreiber.

In the WTA event, top seed and defending champion Vera Zvonareva of Russia breezed to the second round with a 6-3 6-1 victory over Michaela Pastikova of the Czech Republic. Third-seeded Meghan Shaugnessy of the U.S. also advanced, overcoming compatriot Laura Granville 6-3 6-4.
