MANSEHRA: Avalanche victims get compensation

MANSEHRA, Feb 16: MPA Syed Mazhar Ali Qasim has said that people of the district are grateful to the federal and provincial governments for extending financial and moral support in their hour of need.

He was speaking to relatives of affected people after distributing cheques for Rs25,000 each among people injured in the Seri Rajawal incident in the Kaghan valley on Wednesday.

At least 22 people had been killed and nine injured due to an avalanche that had hit the Seri Rajawal village near Naran. The marooned people were evacuated by an army helicopter from the snow-capped mountains.

Mr Qasim said that Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah and Chief Minister Akram Durrani had visited the area and announced relief package for the affected people.

He said that cheques of Rs100,000 sent by the provincial government had been handed over to relatives of the deceased people and cheques of Rs25,000 had been handed over to injured people.

He said that financial aid for the affected people would reach soon which would be disbursed among them. He said that heavy snowfall and road blockades were hampering the relief operation and the priority was to clear the roads and repair them for expediting relief operations. Meanwhile, one thousand bags of flour and other relief items were flown by helicopter on Wednesday to drop in the affected areas.

REVENUE: Mansehra Tehsil Nazim Nawabzada Mohammad Farooq Khan has said that commercial plazas, shops and markets constructed by the TMA at various places in the town would generate Rs5 million revenue annually for the TMA.

Addressing nazims, councillors and traders' representatives after inaugurating the newly constructed fruit and vegetable market at Pano road here on Wednesday, he said that more than Rs10 million had been spent on establishing the new fruit and vegetable market which would not only help the TMA increase its revenue but would also create employment opportunities for people.

He said that after shifting of the fruit and vegetable market to the new site, people would get rid of the traffic mess at the Karakoram Highway (KKH) near the general bus stand. He said the new market was in easy access of the farmers of the Pakhal valley and would save them time and reduce carriage charges.
