ISLAMABAD, May 28: Responding quickly to Pakistan’s request for a change in venue of this August’s World Junior Championship, the World Squash Federation (WSF) has sought the opinion of its member countries in this regard.

The Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) Monday had put up a request with the WSF asking them for moving the August 13-24 event in Chennai (India) to some other country in Asia.

The request was made after tensions between Pakistan and India over the disputed Kashmir region heightened and the PSF felt there could be a security risk for its players playing in Chennai.

“We are glad that the WSF has moved quickly and we are quite hopeful that the championship will be shifted to some other place,” PSF secretary Sqd. Ldr. Sajid Waheed told Dawn.

Sajid said that Pakistan was not the only country to have requested for shifting the venue of the championship. “Some other countries also had reservations about playing in Chennai even before the Pakistan-India standoff because of the communal riots in that country.”

Singapore is said to be keen on hosting the championship, it has been learnt and have already taken steps in this direction by making their intentions to the WSF clear.

“It is still too early to say which country gets the right to stage the event, but a decision should come in about two weeks,” Sajid said.
