ISLAMABAD, Jan 16: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) leader Senator Prof Khurshid Ahmad has expressed concern over reported mobilization of armed forces in Balochistan, particularly in the Sui region.
In a statement here on Sunday, he said the "criminal neglect" on part of the authorities concerned in respect of the gang-rape of a lady doctor and the consequent developments had not only disrupted supply of Sui gas to various parts of the country but also led to armed confrontation in the area.
It has also affected the delicate relationships between the Centre and the people of the province, he said. Prof Khurshid said the issue concerned the entire nation and not merely the local people.
He emphasized that there was no military solution to the problem and it was through serious and meaningful dialogue that the problem could be solved. "I am afraid if no step is taken quickly and affectively, the good work that is being done by the parliamentary committee on Balochistan may become irrelevant," he added.
APP ADDS: Chairman Senate Standing Committee on Local Government and Rural Development Senator Sarwar Khan Kakar has called for broad-based reconciliation and resolution of problems through dialogue.
In a statement on Sunday, Mr Kakar said extremism was no solution to lingering problems and only mutual understanding and amity could pave the way to mitigate hardships of Balochistan people.
Referring to recent occurrences in Sui area, the PML leader said extremist activities by the miscreants could have bad impact on the ongoing reconciliation process. Mr Kakar said Balochistan's people were patriotic and the government was making every possible effort for their progress.
He mentioned various development projects like the Gwadar Port, Mirani dam, Kirthar Canal, coastal highway, Sabahzai dam and other development measures like electrification of villages as well as providing health and education facilities to the people.
He said safeguarding masses interests is responsibility of the government and would fulfil its obligations. "The writ of the government should prevail to safeguard the innocent civilians and protect the national assets," he added.
