KARACHI, Jan 7: Top seed Aqeel Khan keeping his record intact, picked up the men's singles crown in the Sindh Open tennis championship, ending the pretensions of younger brother Jalil 6-3, 6-4, at the Modern Club on Friday.
Breaking Jalil's service twice, Aqeel took the first set 6-3, where service was the dominating force during the proceedings. Jalil played a much improved game in the next set as the two brothers were tied at 4-4. Then Aqeel broke away and picked up the set and match 6-4, after Jalil smashed a crosscourt return into the net.
Yasir, the youngest of the Khan brothers teaming up with Danish Ahmed, pocketed the junior boys under-17 crown with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Ali Asgher Bandeali and Daniyal Alvi 6-3, 6-2.
Yasir and Danish were on top from the start and led from the word go. After winning the first set 6-3, the match was soon over bar the shouting, as the second set was secured quite quickly.
This triumph enabled Yasir to end the tournament with a double crown. A day earlier he picked up the Juniors singles title coming from behind to beat his doubles partner Danish Ahmed 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.
Another youngster with a double crown in this tournament was 14-year-old Nasir Mushtaq. Nasir picked up the under-15 singles crown after beating Jahangir Rashid 6-3, 6-2.
Then teaming up with Ghulam Abbas, the pair bagged the doubles event also by disposing off Jahangir Rashid and Hassan Ahmed 7-6, 6-3. The seniors Doubles event was won by the top seeds Brig Tariq Sadozai and his partner Maqsood, who however had to bring out their best in disposing off Zafer Hassain and Azharuddin 6-2, 6-2.
Aqeel was declared the best senior tennis player in the year 2004. Gathering the most points, bespectacled Ghulam Abbas, was nominated as the best junior player. The top lady in the year 2004 was Nida Wasim.
