HYDERABAD, Dec 21: Activists of the People's Party Parliamentarians held a demonstration outside the press club here on Tuesday to protest against the arrest of Asif Ali Zardari, the husband of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

They raised slogans against the government and said that the unprecedented welcome accorded to Mr Zardari in Sindh after his release had taken the wind out of the sails of the rulers.

They said: "The people will now throw out the illegal and unconstitutional government." MNA Shagufta Jumani, MPA Zahid Ali Bhurgari, Moula Bux Chandio, and Aftab Khanzada led the protest demonstration. They announced to hold another protest demonstration on Wednesday (today).

SNC: The executive committee of the Sindh National Council, at a meeting held here on Monday, expressed concern over deteriorating law and order situation in the province, kidnapping of judges and members of minority community, increase in prices of petroleum products and other essential commodities.

The meeting observed that while Sindh contributed 70 per cent of revenue of the country, it received only 14 per cent of it in return. It deplored that instead of spending money on education and health sectors, the government was spending money on controversial water and port projects.

It maintained that on the one hand the rulers were blowing the trumpet of peace and, on the other, a staggering amount of Rs60 billion was being spent on defence, which was the lion's share of the total budget, and an amount of $1200 million given by America was also meant for defence.

The meeting criticized what it called usurpation of natural resources of Balochistan and efforts to convert its indigenous population into a minority. It demanded that citizenship of those who had settled in Sindh and Balochistan after 1954 should be revoked and they should not be allowed to purchase property.

It also demanded immediate release of nationalist leaders, Samiullah Kalhoro, Fayaz Janwari and Dhani Bukhsh Solangi, and restoration of true democracy in the country according to the 1940 Resolution. It opposed the Kalabagh dam and Greater Thal canal projects and welcomed the move to forge an alliance of the nationalist parties to combat the present situation.
