Aqeel lifts trophy for 6th successive time

KARACHI, Dec 19: Top seed Aqeel Khan lifted the Salma Noorani Trophy for the sixth consecutive time, when he beat younger brother and fourth seed Jalil Khan in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 , in the final of the Salma Noorani Karachi Club Tennis Championship played on the hard courts of the Karachi Club on Sunday.

On a windy misty afternoon, Jalil began the proceedings and took the lead 1-0. But Aqeel with two splendid aces leveled the scores 1-1. The two continued on even keel till 3-3, before Aqeel broke his brother's service to take over the running 4-3.

Then cashing in on his service, was only one game away from the first set 5-3. With the scores at deuce, Aqeel broke Jalil's service for the second time with a lovely backhand crosscourt passing shot and sealed the set in his favour with a powerful smash down the line which Jalil failed to reach lunging forward.

One set down, Jalil tried his level best to stem the tide, but Aqeel was not prepared to give his brother a ghost of a chance to catch up, winning the set and match 6-3.

This victory enabled Aqeel to finish the tournament with a double crown. Earlier on Saturday evening helped on by Jalil, the Khan brothers swept through the Men's Doubles final with a 6-3, 6-4, victory over second seeds Nomi Qamar and Mohammad Shafiq.

Ali Asghar Valika, President of the Karachi Club was the chief guest and presented the winning trophy to Aqeel, with a winner's purse of Rs.50,000 and immediately announced over the address system an Honoury membership of the Karachi Club for Pakistan's top player Aqeel Khan, a statement which was cheered on to the echo.

Jalil had to be content with the runners-up trophy and a cash award of Rs.25,000. Fourteen-year-old Aamna Hameed, a young lady who resides in England, was a picture of cheerfulness, when she received the Ladies trophy along with a cash prize of Rs.25,000.

Lahore's Nida Rahim, taking over the No.1 spot when older sister and defending champion Marium did not participate in this tournament, received a cash price of Rs.10,000 and the runners-up trophy.

The Juniors Trophy under 17 trophy along with a cash prize of Rs.10,000, was received by the immensely talented Tanveer Ashiq, with another lad from Lahore Omer Baber, receiving the runners-up trophy and a sum of Rs.5000.

Tanveer's younger brother Heera took home the winners trophy and Rs.5000, after triumphing in the Boys Under-13 final. But the loudest applause however, was reserved for bespectacled Ghulam Abbas Panju, although he received the runners-up trophy and Rs.2500 which swelled to Rs.7500, when the Karachi Club awarded him a further cash prize of Rs.5000.

The Khan brothers Aqeel and Jalil, winners in the Men's doubles event received Rs.20,000 apiece with the runners-up Nomi Qamar and Mohammad Shafiq each receiving Rs.10,000.

This tournament had 116 entries, with players from all over Pakistan participating in this prestigious tournament, organised for the eighth consecutive year. Following were the final results:

MEN'S SINGLES (FINAL) : Aqeel Khan beat Jalil Khan 6-3, 6-3.

LADIES SINGLES (FINAL) : Aamna Hameed beat Nida Rahim 6-3, 6-1.

JUNIORS SINGLES UNDER-17 (FINAL) : Tanveer Ashiq beat Omer Babar 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

JUNIORS SINGLES UNDER-13 (FINAL). : Heera Ashiq beat Ghulam Abbas Panju 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.

MEN'S DOUBLES (FINAL) : Aqeel Khan and Jalil Khan beat Nomi Qamar and Mohammad Shafiq 6-3, 6-4.
