KARACHI: Water shortage persists

KARACHI, Nov 28: Several parts of the city on Sunday either went dry or received scant water supply, thereby, leaving no choice for residents of the affected localities to either purchase private tankers or consume sub-soil unhygienic water.

The hard-hit localities included parts of Kharadar, Gizri, Clifton's Block 2, Lyari's D D Chaudhry Road, Bismillah Colony, Saeedabad, various colonies of Orangi Town Union Council No 9, Gulshan-i-Iqbal's blocks 13-D/1 and 13-D/2, and a portion of North Nazimabad, Block C.

Office-bearers of Lyari's D D Chaudhry Road Mohalla Committee complained that various apartment buildings and houses situated on either side of the road, adjacent to Bismillah Colony and Lyari Telephone Exchange had been experiencing acute water shortage since July 31. But, the KWSB officials concerned had still not taken measures to restore normal supply despite over two dozen written complaints lodged with them.

Attributing the cause of persisting water shortage to illegal water connections, residents of Clifton's Block 2 deplored that although they had brought the issue into the notice of the KWSB officials concerned on various occasions, the latter had failed to check water shortage, and as such, they were left with no choice but to purchase private tankers at exorbitant rates.

People residing in the vicinity of Technical Training Centre, in North Nazimabad Block C, complained that their issue of contaminated water, which had been lingering from the second day of Eid, had not yet been resolved.

Residents of Orangi Town's Union Council No 9 too complained of getting water supply with a low pressure merely because of leaking pipelines. "We have identified and informed about such leaking pipelines to the KWSB officials concerned, but they have not yet taken measures to plug them," remarked a resident of UC Ghausia Baluch Colony.
