ISLAMABAD, Nov 5: The opposition parties appeared divided over President Bush's re-election as MMA expects a rough ride for President Musharraf in the coming days while the PML-N holds divergent views and the PPP adopts a diplomatic stance on the issue.

Talking to Dawn, Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) leader Liaquat Baloch expressed the hope that in his second term, President Bush would try to rectify his past mistakes and the situation would not be favourable for Gen Musharraf in the next few months.

Mr Baloch said the US elections had proved that the American society was divided over the foreign policy of President Bush. The MMA leader said the US election results showed that George Bush did not have complete backing of Americans in the ongoing war against terrorism.

He said there would be an extreme pressure on President Bush and he would have to change his policies. He was of the view that it would be difficult for Mr Bush to continue his economic policies.

About the impact of US elections on Pakistan, Mr Baloch said the Pakistani rulers would definitely face a complicate situation in the days to come. He said the international scenario demanded that there should be unity in Pakistan and that could not be achieved if military remained in power.

He said Pakistan could come out of the situation only by establishing a true and genuine democracy. On the other hand, the acting parliamentary leader of Pakistan Muslim League-N Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said that totalitarian regime of Gen Musharraf would continue to gain support and strength not from the people of Pakistan but from the US administration.

Talking to Dawn, Mr Khan said that it seemed that President Bush would continue his single track policy based on certain "religious inspiration." He expressed the hope that President Bush realized sooner than later that his policies had left the world "fractured, divided and at odds with itself.
