KARACHI, Oct 15: The action committee of employees of the defunct Sindh Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) set up a hunger strike camp outside Karachi Press Club on Friday urging the transport department and provincial government to solve their problems.

It was the third phase of their hunger strike that entered in its 459th day, but, neither the transport ministry nor Sindh government had taken any notice of the deprived ones.

The action committee members stated that they ended their hunger strike following an agreement signed between the administration and employees of the SRTC on Dec 6, 1999.

According to the agreement, they were to be paid their dues within a year, but, the SRTC administration did not implement it which compelled them to continue hunger strike, they said.

Claiming that 123 employees have died due to different problems caused by deprivation in the protest movement, the action committee warned provincial government that if their righteous and legal demands were not fulfilled before Eidul Fitr, they would be compelled to stage a unique protest which would attract international media. -PPI
