KARACHI, Oct 13: The city nazim, Naimatullah Khan, has empowered the principals of 19 colleges and 35 higher secondary schools to give admissions to students who could not apply to the Central Admission Committee through banks.
The admissions process in the said colleges and higher secondary schools would reopen from October 14. Only students, who fulfil the criteria already set down in the Centralized Admission Policy for colleges, can approach principals of the said educational institutions for admission.
Talking to Dawn, the Adviser to city nazim on Education, Nasim Siddiqui, said there were still some days left for submission of enrolment to the educational board, adding that it was likely that students intending to avail the latest facility of admissions at selected colleges and higher secondary schools would also be in a position to submit their enrolment forms without any extra financial burden.
He said that under the CAP, about 82,000 applicants had been placed for admission, without any favour or breach of rules, and the latest move of the government was nothing but to ensure that every student desirous of pursuing education was allowed to do so, he added.
The last date without late fees for enrolment of students admitted to first year at colleges and higher secondary schools in all faculties except Humanities is October 16. Enrolment for Humanities can be submitted till October 20.
It was observed that if the educational board did not extend the date for acceptance of enrolment forms of lately facilitated students, these students would then have to pay a nominal amount of money as late fees as well.
The colleges where principals had been allowed to admit students as per the latest discretion mostly fell in the outskirts of Karachi. Most of the higher secondary schools, including the three made functional this year, had students below their capacity.
Mr Nasim said that six to seven higher secondary schools in the central parts of the city were having more than the prescribed capacity. Measures had also been ordered with regard to redeployment of teachers from schools where teachers were surplus in number, he said.
Meanwhile, a press release issued from the city nazim's secretariat said the process of admissions had been completed and not a single admission was given against merit. The principals of colleges had been directed to maintain transparency and merit, otherwise they would be held responsible for any irregularity.
The city nazim congratulated the chairman of the admission committee, Prof Rais Alvi, the EDO (Higher Education) and other members of the committee for carrying out the admission activities in a fool-proof manner, added the press release.
The nazim also asked teachers and students to ensure 100 per cent attendance in order to help improve the educational environment in the government institutions.
He also asked the EDO higher education to furnish a summary of postings of teachers from different colleges at the new colleges and make arrangements for the supply of furniture and scientific instruments there.
