Three die in Indian shelling

MUZAFFARABAD, May 24: Three people were killed along the Line of Control in Azad Kashmir on Thursday as a result of Indian shelling, which resumed on Friday, police said.

Giving details, Superintendent of Police Raja Ghulam Sarwar told Dawn that Sakina Bibi, 36, wife of Bunyad Hussain Shah, died in Sedian village while Ghulam Mohammad, son of Mastana, died in Neza Pir village in Forward Kahuta sector in the southern district of Bagh.

In the southernmost Bhimbher district, Ghulam Hussain Gujjar, son of Ali Mohammad, was killed in Lakh Chakh village in overnight shelling The shelling also continued past midnight in Hajira, Abbaspur and Sehra sectors in the neighbouring district of Poonch, in which more than two dozen houses were damaged.

Four people, Jamshaid Begum, Shamim Akhtar, Mohammad Hanif and Mohammad Shakil were injured in Sehra sector. On Friday noon, Indian troops started shelling civilian populations in Khuiratta sector in district Kotli. According to initial reports, a shell hit a house in Inderla Kotehra village, injuring Saima, 17, daughter of Haji Manzoor, and her 7-year old sister, Asma.

Another woman, Nur Begum, widow of Ghulam Mohammad, was injured in the same village, Mr Sarwar said. No more casualties had been reported from anywhere else till the filing of this report.

SIALKOT: A villager was killed and nine others were seriously injured as a result of heavy Indian mortor shelling on the border villages along the Sialkot working boundary’s Bajwat and Shakargarh-Narowal sectors, on Friday, Our Correspondent adds.

Official sources told Dawn that villagers Muhammad Yunas, son of Ghulam Hussain; Abdul Rasheed, son of Ghulam Ali; Hanifan Bibi, wife of Abdul Hamid; Abdul Karim, son of Ghulam Muhammad; Asif Ali, son of Ghulam Ali; Nisar Ali, son of Mohammad Ali; Mohammad Akram, Muhammad Iqbal, Mukhtar Ali and Waris Din, son of Taj Din, were sitting in the courtyards of their houses when the Indian security forces fired several heavy mortor shells on them killing Waris Din on the spot and injuring other villagers seriously. They were admitted to Sialkot CMH in critical condition.
